Railroads have traditionally inspected wheels r defects statically using manual, labor-intensive nondestructive inspection techniques. Now, the AAR's efforts to improve safety through its Strategic Research Initiative (SKI) program have produced a wayside ultrasonic inspection system that can detect cracks in moving railcar wheels using specially designed ultrasonic probes and detection algorithms.
