The staff at Irving Elementary School will celebrate Friday with one of Principal Brian Flick's famous, 7-pound chocolate cakes.
The midsize school, tucked in a quiet residential neighborhood in Eugene's River Road area, earned the first "exceptional" rating for itself and the Bethel School District on the annual state school report cards, scheduled for public release by the Department of Education today.
Flick delivered the good news at an after-school staff meeting Tuesday. But while the label was a nice stroke, the staff didn't need to be told its school is exceptional, third-grade teacher Connie Whiddett said.
"I think everyone just felt like, yeah, we've worked hard and we're glad we've been recognized," she said. "But it does bother me when other schools don't get that recognition. I know the people in this district give 100 percent or more, so when you get a 'satisfactory' label, it can be disheartening."
