The Chrysler group is recalling nearly 40,000 2005-06 Chrysler PT Cruisers to replace rear quarter-panel windows that may fall from the cars.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the defect is a safety hazard because flying glass could strike another vehicle or a pedestrian.

The company had hoped to have dealers inspect the windows and replace only those that appeared likely to separate from the vehicles.
