To the Editor:

These two headlines appeared recently in Automotive News: "No orders, no auction, Chrysler tells dealers'' (April 16) and "Chrysler blew it: New auction rule won't spur sales'' (Opinion, April 23).

Both headlines - and the related article and editorial - have a couple of things in common: They are poorly researched and completely misleading. The question is: Who really blew it?

Here are the facts: On July 1, the Chrysler group will change its policy related to closed used-vehicle auctions. It will require that dealers who want to participate in those auctions must meet at least 50 percent of their contractual Minimum Sales Responsibility.

The rationale behind the change is to ensure that dealers have a healthy balance between new- and used-vehicle sales. The new policy has been reviewed by the Chrysler group's dealer council...
