The $1 billion assembly plant that Kia Motors Corp. is building in West Point, Ga., will have more in common with sister Hyundai Motor Co.'s Alabama plant 80 miles away than with most other Kia factories around the world.

Unlike the sprawling rectangular patchworks that characterize Kia plants in Korea and its joint manufacturing ventures in China, the Georgia plant will be a compact collection of buildings. Stamping, welding, paint and assembly operations will have dedicated structures linked by raised tunnels through which unfinished vehicles move on conveyor belts.

The setup closely resembles that of the 2-year-old Hyundai plant in Montgomery, Ala., which was designed to make expansions easier and to maximize linear footage. Rather than one receiving area, the plant has several smaller ones that put the part close to the point of assembly.
