With its built-from-scratch supply chain firmly in place and two years of production under its belt, Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama LLC can focus on quality and cost with its purchasing. Or not.

The Montgomery plant had barely caught its breath from reaching full production last fall when preparations began for a second plant to build four-cylinder engines for Hyundai and sister Kia Motors Corp. in North America. Kia is building a $1 billion assembly plant in nearby Georgia that will use many Hyundai suppliers.

It's a pace to which Dave Mark, Hyundai's senior manager for parts development in Alabama, is accustomed.
