Developing the random collecting and enthusiastic explorations of earlier amateur antiquarians, modern systematic folklore began in the Romantic period, reflected in the literature and art of the period. Celtic nationalists in particular believed that the faerylore was relic of the old Gaelic beliefs and were anxious to preserve them as part of their Gaelic traditions that seemed in danger of dying out as their cultures were assimilated by the English.
