When Gee Automotive Cos. bought Huling Brothers Auto Center in January, the private dealership group expected the three Seattle dealerships it acquired to contribute solid business and valuable brand equity.

The company didn't know it was inheriting a nasty scandal that began at the Buick-Pontiac-GMC dealership included in the sale. It has been scrambling to recover ever since.

Three former sales employees of the dealership face trial in July on charges they stole about $70,000 in cash and a $30,000 truck from a mentally ill customer last summer. The dealership is not implicated.

Gee Automotive CEO Ryan Gee says his company did not know of the allegations until a week after the sale closed - and the day before the lurid tale made front-page headlines in The Seattle Times.
