ACROSS THE NARROW LAKE, A PAIR OF CANADA GEESE ANXIOUSLY GUIDES A STRING OF DAY-OLD GOSLINGS THROUGH THE POND LILIES TOWARD THEIR NEST, INTO THE LONG GRASS THAT WILL CAMOUFLAGE THEM FROM A HUNGRY EAGLE CIRCLING OVERHEAD. BUT THE ATTACK DOESN'T COME FROM ABOVE: THERE'S A SWIRL IN THE WATER OFF OUR BOW AND, SUDDENLY, THE HAPLESS CHICK AT THE TAIL END OF THE STRING IS VACUUMED INTO THE VORTEX. THE SHADOWY OUTLINE OF A CARP DARTS OFF THROUGH THE WEEDS AND DOWN INTO DEEPER WATER, WHILE THE GEESE CARRY ON, OBLIVIOUS TO THEIR LOSS.
THE BLAST OF A SEMI-TRAILER'S HORN JOLTS US FROM OUR WILDERNESS TRANCE. IT'S ON THE TRANS-CANADA HIGHWAY, HIDDEN BEHIND THE TREES THAT SURROUND THE LAKE. DESPITE ITS NATURAL APPEARANCE, THIS IS NOT THE WILD OUTBACK OF BRITISH COLUMBIA--IT'S BURNABY LAKE, A WILDLIFE OASIS IN THE HUB OF CANADA'S THIRD-LARGEST METROPOLIS.
