As I sit writing these comments on an early March morning in North Vancouver, the radio carries news of a tragic accident in nearby Abbotsford, B.C., where a van carrying 16 migrant workers has flipped out of control, hurling at least three passengers to their deaths. Questions are already being raised about the safety conditions experienced by such workers, who now form a significant source of agricultural labour in central and western Canada. Other recent news reports have carried features relating the difficulties encountered by the current generation of new immigrants as they struggle to better themselves and move out of poverty. The general inference drawn from such reports is that there appears to be growing difficulties with the way in which immigrants coming to Canada are being treated, and with the extent to which Canadian society allows new immigrants to reap the social and economic rewards that they hoped to achieve.
