In the March 18 issue of The Clarion-Ledger, there was a debate about immigration reform. It was between Rep. Ralph Doxey (R-Holly Springs) and Sen. Mike Lott (R-Petal). Although they disagreed about what a state like Mississippi could do, they agreed fully about their frustration with the federal government. Immigration is a federal issue, not a state issue. In fact, Doxey complained that "the feds" had done essentially nothing about immigration since 1986.

This reminds me of Graham Greene's 1939 novel "The Lawless Roads." It's about an English priest who visits Mexico in the 1930s when post-revolution persecution of Christians was easing. Even though the old repressive laws were still the same in all of Mexico, the easing was happening unevenly. The priest was able to travel around safely in most states....
