DERRICK NOBMAN FACED a devastating loss when a fire threatened to destroy his family's legacy of nearly a century. But after two years of working to rebuild, Nobman's Hardware Emporium in Oyster Bay, N.Y., is back in business and even better than before.
A fire in January 2005 gutted the historic building, which had been around since the late 1800s. "It was pretty much a total loss," Nobman says. "The exterior of the building was still standing, but the inside was completely burned out. From the basement to the roof, there was not much left."
Despite the difficult road ahead of them, the Nobmans never considered giving up. Although the next two years would be filled with hard work, the family did not let the destruction of a building put an end...
