Verifying the signatures on petitions demanding a vote on the Legislature's budget-balancing package of tax increases will be a formality. On Tuesday groups opposing the tax increases submitted nearly three times the number of signatures required, a big enough cushion to guarantee a vote even if an unheard-of percentage of signatures is invalidated. When they vote on Feb. 3, Oregonians will have to put themselves in legislators' shoes, and decide for themselves whether their representatives in Salem acted responsibly when they resorted to tax increases to balance the budget.
