COTTAGE GROVE - The final minutes were taking too long for Marist, and did not quite last long enough for Junction City as the fortunes of the Sky-Em League rivals were quickly changing.

The Spartans seemed secure with a 19-point lead and fewer than nine minutes left in the game, but then watched as Junction City scored two touchdowns in two minutes and later moved twice into Marist territory in search of the winning touchdown.

Not until Marist junior Mike Shemkus intercepted Junction City quarterback Brett McClintock with 20.3 seconds remaining could the top-ranked Spartans finally celebrate a 26-21 victory over unranked Junction City in a Class 3A football semifinal Saturday evening at Cottage Grove High School.

"I'm 33 years old and I'm going to wake up feeling like I'm 53," Marist coach Mike Allison said.
