Something, somebody had to give. It was not, it seemed, going to be the Ducks.

It was their event, their show and in their house.

Which is why the Oregon Classic belongs to 24th-ranked Oregon following Saturday night's 83-78 win over North Carolina State at McArthur Court with an announced crowd of 3,730 looking on.

"We're excited about this win," said Cathrine Kraayeveld, the UO senior who threw in a team-high 18 points, grabbed eight rebounds, blocked two shots, dished out two assists and made a steal to secure the most valuable player honor for the two-day, four-team event.

"North Carolina State's a great team, but we're 5-0."

They truly are, and it is the first time since 1999-2000 that the Ducks have begun a women's basketball season with five consecutive victories.

"We got back to playing team ball tonight," said Bev Smith, the Oregon coach whose team now has recorded victories over three of the college game's top teams - Louisiana State, Kansas and North Carolina State - this season.

"Any time you get 20 assists on 29 shots, you know you are playing team ball."

Joining Kraayeveld on the six-player all-classic outfit were Oregon teammate Andrea Bills, North Carolina State's Kaayla Chones, Kansas' Tamara Ransburg and Crystal Kemp and Sarah Craig of Sacramento State.

In the first game of the second night of doubleheaders, Sacramento State gave Kansas a run for its money before losing to the Jayhawks, 70-64.
