Last month, I presented a brief overview of some of the issues that gifted youngsters and their parents face. This month's focus is on parenting strategies and resources.

Gifted children are usually intense, extra-emotional and highly sensitive.

Teach your child self-soothing methods such as humming, deep breathing and journaling. Help them find healthy ways to express their emotions. Suggest that they visualize a beautiful container so they can place their intense feelings there when it's not appropriate or safe to show them.

Allow them to watch activities before participating or to leave early if they're overwhelmed.
