Modern art is healing

Modern art was once pronounced damaging to the minds of the proletariat, and the National Socialists considered it degenerate and unworthy of their `superior' culture. Art outlawed and persecuted by both communists and Nazis seems equally unsuitable to PeaceHealth's `healing' minds. There are many in the health and art world, Jungian psychologists and Tibetan Buddhists, whose experience dramatically contradicts the attitude and opinion of PeaceHealth's consultants and Texas architect Roger Ulrich (Register-Guard, April 19). Capitalism has its own ways of exploiting and profiteering from art as a commodity.

This Oregon architect's healing would most likely be challenged by such non-challenging `evidence-based art." This new philosophy does not define art, but rather describes pleasant wall decoration - vapid and insulting to the senses. Indeed, it would be better to have blank walls.

Are these consultants and experts taking us to another level of an insurance-controlled future? Non-representational art has played a potent healing role in many cultures since ancient times as does modern abstract art today. Save a wall or two for it at the hospital.
