Cranky coordinator Nick Aliotti, forever fretting over his defense, let a smile escape his lips as Saturday's breezy afternoon mellowed into a brilliant evening.
Aliotti's shirt clung to his chest, still damp from the dousing he received after the Green team he was coaching beat UO offensive coordinator Chip Kelly's White team Saturday in Oregon's spring game, 20-6, before 11,723 fans at Autzen Stadium. Besides the victory, Aliotti had watched the defenses on both sides allow just two touchdowns, with the White team closing the game on a successful goal-line stand.
And there was more that pleased Aliotti, wet but not sticky under the bright sun in Autzen.
"They got me with water," the smiling coordinator said of the ceremonial drenching, "and I really appreciate the water instead of the Gatorade."
Saturday's spring game provided an apt conclusion to this month of practice for the Ducks. The offense, lacking all five linemen from last season, was inconsistent in its first major exhibition under Kelly. The defense allowed few big plays, and made some, too.
