It has been a long and arduous march to today's start of the Eugene Marathon for Richard Maher, the event's race director.

The veteran marathoner has been at the wheel of resurrecting a 26.2-mile race in the community for nearly two years.

The cost in labor hours has been high. The cost in dollars has been high, too, possibly hitting the $300,000 mark, according to Andy Heily, the race's co-founder.

The start of the marathon, the first in Eugene since the Nike/OTC Marathon ended its run in September 1984 and the World Veterans Games Marathon in 1989, is scheduled for 7 a.m. at Hayward Field.
