Miller's stance is proactive

I was extremely disappointed to see the attempt to discredit the achievements of the South Eugene High School football team and slam its head coach, Chris Miller (Register-Guard, Nov. 20).

To imply that creatine use at SEHS is more widespread than any similar high school is completely unfounded. And while creatine use is somewhat controversial, neither the medical nor nutritional communities have provided solid evidence that creatine, when taken in reasonable amounts, is harmful to one's health.

I'm not a proponent of using creatine or any other substance in an attempt to enhance one's physical performance. But so long as it is legally available to anyone, including minors, there will be those that choose to include this supplement in their diets.

Miller advised both players and parents of the pros and cons of creatine use, and given his involvement in the nutrition industry, he is uniquely qualified to speak to one's concerns. His proactive stance in controlling creatine's potential misuse should be applauded.

As a middle school football coach in the South Eugene area, I have had numerous occasions to observe Miller during his two-year tenure. He cares deeply for both the physical and emotional welfare of all his players. He is an excellent role model and wonderful ambassador for SEHS. Painting Miller's actions as unethical or wrong to further the newspaper's crusade against creatine use was truly a cheap shot.
