Rest areas became trashy

My goodness - how life comes in circles (`Rest stop to rest shop," Register-Guard, April 14).

I remember when the Garden State Parkway was built in New Jersey. In the medians Howard Johnson restaurants were built. They were to keep the area clean and provide a respite for travelers.

Well, since Howard Johnson restaurants were there to make money, the areas became trashy. No one, unless they were in desperate shape, wanted to use the restrooms. The people who hung out there were scary.

We need to remember that companies are there to make a profit - and not for the benefit of the public....
