Over the years, Randhurst Shopping Center has set trends in the retail community.
Built in 1962 and designed by pioneer mall architect Victor Gruen, it was the first enclosed regional mall in the Chicago area.
In the 1980s, it underwent a renovation that included the creation of one of the area's first food courts. Just recently, it added stores like Bed Bath & Beyond to the mall's perimeter.
But with the loss of key anchors, increasing competition from nearby malls and the recent success of the Deer Park Town Center, Randhurst appears poised to follow the latest trend.
Randhurst General Manager Tom Castagnoli recently reaffirmed that management is leaning toward gutting the mall, which sits on 100 acres near Rand and Elmhurst roads, and turning it into a lifestyle center.
Sometimes referred to as "boutique malls," lifestyle centers are generally aimed at upscale customers and tailored to quick shopping trips, with convenient parking and attractive streetscapes.
