Dist. 214 editorial really missed mark

To the editor: Your snarky editorial regarding the tone of the school board race in District 214 was disappointing and incomplete. It also failed to connect the dots on an obvious link between two challengers and a radical right wing organization with an agenda to impose their extremist views on the district.

You correctly interpret the margin of victory by the incumbents as an affirmation of the community's approval of the overall direction of the district, its finances and the academic performance of its students.

Yet you bemoan what you term "scare tactics" employed by the incumbents, of a Kansas-style conservative social agenda. You even admit that to an extent it could be understandable given the endorsement of two of the challengers by Phyllis Schlafly.

Your claim the challengers gave no sign they had any radical social agenda is flat-out wrong. Two of the challengers focused ostensibly on financial issues. But behind the scenes campaign literature - funded by Schlafly and (Jim) Oberweis - carried a more ominous tone; literature that was left in mailboxes, on windshields in church parking lots and e-mailed to residents.
