Informed voters first need information

To the editor: I must compliment the Daily Herald on the excellent coverage of the run-up to the April 17 local elections. It was the most information published about local political issues relating to Hanover Park in the 23 years of my residency.

But I do want to respond to your April 21 Saturday Soapbox, "Voting is a gift." You ask why people do not vote in local elections.

If you were to ask people in my neighborhood what they thought about their municipal government, you would find that they have little or no knowledge of it. Why?

The main problem is there is too little information about the actions of local government. There is the saying, "All politics is local." But we hear nothing about the proceedings of our local political bodies. When people lack knowledge of the political community in which they live, they have limited incentive to participate in local elections.

There are two village board meetings per month in Hanover Park. The media does not cover them, and the village board does not disseminate information in a public forum.

When we have no knowledge, we have no means of knowing how well they are representing our community interests.

There is a very essential and meaningful relationship between democratic government, the free media and the people living in that democracy. Politicians disseminate only the news that serves their purposes. It is the essential role of the media to investigate and report the actions of government as they relate to the interests of the people being served.

I have been talking to residents about the detailed election information in the Daily Herald. They have made comments like, "I guess I should subscribe again! I dropped my subscription because there was very little local news."

If there were more local news of this nature, there would be more reason for people...
