COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT
Olivia Houser of Willamette Christian School and Jessica Stipek of Oak Hill School are two of the local favorites in the 12-school Emerald Youth League district track and field meet Saturday at Lane Community College. The event is really four track meets, with separate scoring for boys and girls in fifth/sixth and seventh/eighth grade divisions. In addition to the two local private schools, teams from public schools at the meet will be from Alsea, Central Linn, Crow, Harrisburg, Lowell, Mapleton, McKenzie, Monroe, Oakridge and Triangle Lake. Houser's favorite event is the 200-meter dash. Now a seventh-grader, Houser won last year's fifth/sixth district race in 28.76 seconds, half a second ahead of Stipek. Houser has a 28.5 best for her school this year and a PR of 27.7 set last summer in an all-comers meet. Stipek is a year younger, so won't be competing with Houser this week. She expects to run in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter events Saturday, having won all three of her 400-meter races this spring in fields including seventh- and eighth-graders. Her fastest time is 1:08.34. Saturday's field events begin at 9 a.m., with the first running event scheduled for 11 a.m. Admission is free.
