James Nielsen strode comfortably across the finish line, the first to do so in the first Eugene Marathon on Sunday.

His wide smile said it all to an estimated crowd of more than 2,000 at the finish line on Leo Harris Parkway southeast of Autzen Stadium.

It was Nielsen's initial attempt at the 26.2-mile test of strength, stamina and courage. And he passed it.

His winning time of 2 hours, 21 minutes and 1 second enabled Nielsen to duck under the Olympic Trials men's "B" standard of 2:22:00, the only runner to clear that barrier.
