Just like its host city, the Eugene Marathon required no dress code.

As the blast from the starting gun rang out shortly after 7 a.m. Sunday near Hayward Field, a man with "Rex" on his jersey began his 26.2 miles in a cowboy hat. "Manuel" sported a sombrero. Another, nicknamed "Barefoot," was - no suspense here - shoeless.

Many donned "Pre Lives" tops, in homage to legendary University of Oregon runner Steve Prefontaine, and an echoing of the marathon's theme: "Running in the Footsteps of Legends."
