Even in an era where professional ballplayers earn $20 million a year and corporate executives enjoy incomes that outpace the economies of small nations, it's reasonable to assume that the typical American worker would think an annual salary of $165,200 is generous. After all, most people in this country earn a whole lot less.

But that salary--which is what U.S. district court judges make--simply isn't much when compared to what the average federal trial court judge could be making in the private sector. And federal judges aren't the only ones watching as their earning power evaporates. State judges are generally paid less than their federal counterparts--in some instances, substantially so.
