The third time is not a charm - at least not when it comes to concussions.

People like to ask Dr. Kevin Guskiewicz, a University of North Carolina professor who is a certified athletic trainer and an expert on concussions, how many is too many. How many concussions does it take to permanently shelve an athlete?

Guskiewicz says that while researchers have yet to put a definitive number on it, his alarms would go off with No. 3 - as a doctor, and as a parent.

"I have three young boys, all of whom are very active in sports, including football," Guskiewicz said. "I think that three is a number that concerns me. If we're sitting there at two, I am certainly going to be thinking about whether we want to switch sports. Because when you talk about multiple concussions, I'm concerned with the later-in-life consequences, especially as we learn more through research.
