Despite Spain's early modern role in constructing and maintaining the first truly global world empire and the primacy of its encounter with the inhabitants of the Americas, what has come to be known as modernity arose later, as a response to (and completion of) the destruction of Spanish hegemony. Spain became the symbolic vestige of the Middle Ages, poeticized and exoticized in the discourse of rationalism and could never be modern according to the rules of the victors. For most of the history of Hispanism, studies in Spanish Romanticism have been tethered to a critical paradigm based on Spain's supposed position on the periphery of Europe and European modernity.
