Mark weissman is committed to charity, but not just any charity.

The 29-year-old New York investment banker, who allocates 10% of his annual compensation to philanthropy, mainly supports lesser-known nonprofits.

"I give to organizations that are a little under the radar and where my money is going to make a difference,'' says Mr. Weissman, whose annual giving extends to as many as 20 organizations.

They include Project Sunshine, a group started by a college friend that dispatches volunteers dressed as clowns to hospitals throughout the country, and Young Wall Street, which he launched last year with some hedge fund professionals to raise money for local social service, drug rehabilitation and educational...
