With guests on horns, Trio Maderas took the stage during a recent fundraiser at Cozmic Pizza.
The mother of most of the musicians was the first to hit the dance floor. Their father, "Papa" Woods, stood toward the back, bobbing his head to the beat while enjoying a slice of pizza.
Soon, a crowd of mostly women was dancing enthusiastically with big smiles as Trio Maderas played its funky, improvisational grooves spiked with messages of love and positivity.
Both parents had performed before the headlining Trio Maderas went on. Mom danced and Dad sang a folk song with acoustic guitar.
A good portion of those in attendance had shared something on stage: a poem, a speech, a rap, a song or, in the case of an 8-year-old named Talib, a drum solo.
All were part of a community coming together to raise money for the Wayne Morse Youth Program. Its goal: creating a solar powered portable stage.
