JJ Grey grew up with an almost virgin forest behind his family home. When developers marked trees for removal with pink ribbon, he and his friends pretended they were American Indians and that each ribbon represented a victory over commercialization.

The kids were the protectors of the forests. Defenders of the land.

"We all had our own sticks, you know, and you'd tie the ribbons on the stick like it was cool to see how many you popped off," Grey said as he traveled toward a gig in Telluride, Colo. "We played in it all the time.
