JACKSON -- Among many honors, he's been named among VIP magazine's Top 10 Fascinating People. Fittingly, the African-American Republican from Mississippi serves as board chairman of the Young Up and Coming Professionals Society.

But Nic Lott is more enthusiastic about how his family characterized him early on. "My grandmother and mother always told me I had an old soul," said Lott, the son of Lucien and Pandoria Chariot and grandson of Alberta Lott. "When growing up in Smith County, my grandmother never accepted an excuse for failing to try. She taught me to learn from my mistakes and give it 150% more on the next try."
