What is community? Why is it so important for families? How can a childbirth educator facilitate its development among her students?
The African Proverb, "It takes a village to raise a child" speaks eternal truth. However, the problems faced by the modern Western world are that more and more often, women are birthing away from their own family. People are becoming far more transient, travelling across states or even continents to work, going away to college in another town and then remaining there to live after graduation. It has also become easier to become a parent alone. By that I mean through using artificial donor insemination programs, and families do not feel bound by marriage in the same way that they were 50 or 60 years ago. For this and other reasons, it is vital in childbirth classes to create a sense of community.
