Retail-based clinics have been heralded by some as a must-have strategy to address the new healthcare consumerism movement, which demands fast and convenient service for minor medical care. But others wonder whether it's just a passing fad, much like the urgent-care centers of the 1980s and the primary-care offices in shopping malls of the 1990s.

The concept of the retail-based clinic rests on several business principles, but is primarily a strategy of big-box chains with retail pharmacies--including retail giants Wal-Mart and Target, and the supermarket chain Winn-Dixie--to drive more foot traffic to their stores and replace customers lost to mail-in prescription plans.
