Mohawk coach Bart Rothenberger said before the playoffs started that the Mountain West League had a good chance to get three teams into the Class 1A boys basketball tournament.

Now that it has happened, coaches say that a few other Mountain West teams might have deserved a shot at state as well.

"It is not a shock to me that three teams made it," McKenzie coach Glenn Johannes said. "You could have said four teams, but you only get three in the sub-tournament. I think our league is by far the toughest league in the state. We see each other two times and a couple of us saw each other three times. You never have an easy night and all three teams who made it are deserving."

Mohawk, McKenzie and Lowell make up 37.5 percent of the field when the OSAA Class 1A boys basketball tournament begins today in Baker City.
