Bev Smith's next victory would be her 100th as a women's basketball coach, but whether she reaches or, more to the point, significantly surpasses that milestone at Oregon, remains in question.

The chance to achieve that distinction remains in Smith's control, either in this weekend's Pac-10 tournament or a likely WNIT appearance.

The Ducks face California in the tournament quarterfinals Saturday morning, after holding off UCLA to finish sixth in the conference with an 8-10 league record, part of a 16-12 regular season.

Beyond that, however, Smith's fate rests with incoming athletic director Pat Kilkenny, who is set to take over from Bill Moos on April 1. While there is an overriding sentiment that Smith has overachieved with this season's team, the current administration won't speculate on her future until Kilkenny has reviewed the entirety of Smith's six-year tenure.

"At the end of the year, in the next month, Pat and I and possibly (University President Dave Frohnmayer) will sit down and have a lengthy discussion about the direction of the program," said UO senior women's administrator Renee Baumgartner, who oversees the women's basketball program and will advise Kilkenny. "There's been a lot of transition right now."

Smith is under contract through June 2009, at a base salary of $150,000, plus $50,000 in supplemental income and potential incentives. But perceived struggles in recruiting, a dwindling fan...
