Bad-sport adults ruin games

I read with interest the article on sportsmanship in the city youth programs (Register-Guard, Feb. 19).

I am a 17-year-old referee for Kidsports and this is my fourth year refereeing. I have to say that this year has shown a drastic drop in sportsmanship among parents and coaches alike.

So far this season I have been physically abused, yelled at, threatened, spat on and insulted. I know I miss calls now and then. We refs cannot see absolutely everything, no matter how hard we try. But what we can do is know the rules and enforce them to the best of our abilities.

I know that I hustle up and down the floor to keep up with the players, and I do my best to be in position to make the calls. So in the wake of what has happened this year, I am not going to work in these kinds of conditions any more.

When parents and coaches create this environment, they are hurting the kids. I believe that Kidsports and the YMCA need to adopt a stricter policy on parent misconduct. Having a coach or parent yelling and cussing out a ref cannot be teaching the younger generation a correct view on sportsmanship.

I would like to ask all parents who go to a game this weekend to keep in mind that we refs are human and are doing our best. Parents need to remember to just let the kids have a positive experience.
