The Eugene City Council on Monday took a step that could lead toward regulating tailgate drinking on private lots near Autzen Stadium.

At the suggestion of the police department, councilors directed the staff to write possible rules aimed at curbing alcohol-related problems, such as underage drinking and illegal alcohol sales in parking lots near Autzen. City officials also want to see if the University of Oregon, with a large lot next to the stadium, would agree to the yet-to-be written rules.

The move is an attempt to end an inconsistency between what is allowed at the UO's lot and what is technically illegal but tolerated in the private lots along Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

One possible outcome: parking lot...
