Ch-ch-ch-changes -- turn and face the strain. Transmeta is making the transition from being a microprocessor supplier to operating as a company that licenses microprocessor intellectual property cores to others. The company is focusing its efforts on licensing its intellectual property rather than selling chips, and is also offering engineering services on a contract basis, notably to Microsoft and Sony (52% of sales). Transmeta has lined up several projects with the Sony Group. Other leading customers include Fujitsu America (16%) and Hewlett-Packard International (15%).

Shares were down 19% as fourth quarter loss widens.
