There is an adage among those who practice in the criminal justice system that "prosecutors deal with cases; defense lawyers deal with people." Prosecutors focus on the alleged misconduct, assess its relative punitive value, and act accordingly; defense lawyers must look beyond the facts of the case to determine how they relate to the larger picture of the client's life.

Indefensible, David Feige's collection of colorful and insightful anecdotes, illustrates that adage. Feige writes from the perspective of an overburdened public defender working in the overtaxed justice system of contemporary urban America, and he provides a "day in the life" look at a Bronx defender trying to cover all his bases.
