Article Excerpt After 33 years at the same firm, Fred Harris decided it was time for a change, and moved from one division of General Dynamics in Connecticut to another in San Diego, National Steel and Shipbuilding Co.
Harris has been Nassco's president for a year, a step up from the No. 2 job he held at Electric Boat, a maker of Navy submarines.
At Nassco, Harris heads up the largest industrial manufacturing company in the region, with 4,600 direct employees and another 400 contractors, which brings the payroll to 5,000 workers.
The work involves construction of large industrial cargo ships, such as the U.S. Navy's T-AKE class of vessels.
