In her book, the author has attempted to elucidate the cultural and historical place and role of this play and its performance in Russian theatrical history of the period from 1920 to 1930. Up to now, neither Olesha's play nor Meyerhold's performance has been subject to intensive scholarly investigation, as both were considered unsuccessful.
