The massive underwater earthquake that caused the Indian Ocean Tsunami on Boxing Day 2004 highlighted Aceh's decades-old struggle for independence from Indonesia. At the same time, it diverted attention away from Indonesia's Western-most province, and another struggle for independence--that of West Papua.

Migration to the province known as 'Papua' has been rapidly increasing in recent years. According to West Papuan Baptist Minister Reverend Sofyan Yoman, in the past when Indonesian migrants came to West Papua, many of them were Christians hoping for the freedom to practice their religion. This is no longer the case. Muslim Indonesians now outnumber Christian West Papuans in the province....
