Well, as the saying goes, "Isn't that special?" And that ironic meaning of "special" certainly applies to the most recent midterm elections. Midterms are the way our democracy does a correction for the excesses of the electorate from the most recent quadrennial outcome. It is a form of buyer's remorse for what voters got at the polling booth with the presidential race. In 2004, 53 million Americans elected W for a second term. One must surmise that the tradition of not changing commander-in-chief horses in mid-stream overcame the underlying sentiment of the voters. It is like my father used to say about second marriages: "It is the triumph of optimism over experience."
