In escaping an abusive relationship in October, 24-year-old Kassie Kruit and her infant son, Ryder, found themselves in what could have been an even more dire situation.

Kruit, who was given less than two weeks to find shelter, began frantically putting her name on waiting lists at every family housing program in the area, only to find that they were all booked for months. Money was tight; Kruit's savings would get them only a temporary stay at a hotel.

"I was looking into everything available," she said. "I was running into a brick wall everywhere."
