As she prepares to close one of the best prep swimming careers in state history, North Bend's Denise Green sometimes thinks back to the start.

"I remember my first high school meet and I was so nervous," Green said. "And my coach said, `Why are you so nervous? It's just a dual meet.' I was shivering and shaking and thinking, `Oh, my gosh. I don't know what to do.' But I ended up winning the race by quite a bit."

It has been the same story ever since that meet at the North Bend Pool as Green heads into the homestretch of her prep career with nine district championships and nine state championships to her credit. She already has accepted a scholarship to swim at Boise State University.
