Congress must cut Iraq funding

While President Bush bears the main responsibility for the Iraq war, we must also recognize the role of Congress in continuing the war by funding it.

Sens. Ron Wyden and Gordon Smith and Rep. Peter DeFazio have repeatedly voted for supplemental war funding bills, even while criticizing the war. We're afraid they will do so again in February when Bush sends Congress his next supplemental request.

As Rep. Dennis Kucinich has said, the only real power Congress has to stop the war is to cut off its funding. He has also said that the only way to "support the troops" is to bring them home, and that there would be enough money in the pipeline for this if the next supplemental is defeated.

An overwhelming majority of the public now opposes the war - yet the war goes on, with Bush proposing to escalate it and even many Democrats saying they won't oppose the surge or cut off funding. Did they miss the message of the last election? Continuing the war is morally intolerable. We are destroying Iraq, killing our own soldiers for nothing, wrecking the military and bankrupting our economy.

We call upon Wyden, Smith and DeFazio to oppose both the surge and the $100 billion supplemental funding bill that Bush will introduce on Feb....
