Two significant historical events, temporally apart, accompanied my thoughts as I read this book. About one million Lebanese citizens were made homeless as conflict raged between the Israel and Hezbollah in July and August 2006. Within minutes of the declaration of a UN imposed ceasefire, thousands began returning to claim home in a still vulnerable and tenuous military environment. Most did not have homes to return to and the war was not even an hour gone. Yet going home was crucial, even necessary.
Closer to my own erstwhile home (India), I thought of my paternal grandmother (Biji) who became a refugee as a result of the British partition of India into two countries in 1947--secular India and Islamic Pakistan. Biji, a Hindu resident of the province of Punjab on the Pakistani side, was forced to flee to the new India because of the Hindu-Muslim communal riots that followed India's partition and freedom from British rule.
